Why Egypt?

From childhood we hear about Egyptian hieroglyphs, Egyptian pyramids, Ancient Egypt, etc. But the most extraordinary thing is that neither Ancient Egyptians nor modern citizens of Egypt call their country in such way. In ancient world inhabitants of this territory called their country Black and they called themselves people of the Black land because of fertile lands of the Nile valley.
In Ancient times the tribes of Arabia, Asia and Mesopotamia having connections with people of this country called this nation Misr that meant the populated place or town. Probably these tribes were impressed by the population of Egypt and by the great number of cities situated close to each other. Modern Egyptians also call their country Misr.
Then why do Europeans as well as many other countries call Egypt in such way? This denomination was given by Ancient Greeks and came from the city Memphis that was the first big city the Greeks met on their way. In fact Greeks called this city Hicupta or Aiguptos. And the last variant they took to name the country.
That is why the European word Egypt is also very ancient and it came to the language of many countries of the world from Ancient Greek. And since then people going to Egypt really go to Egypt but come to Misr as the natives call their country in such way. But in fact this country has a lot of additional denominations connected with famous things it has as for example, the motherland of pyramids.
